Lawrence PTA

May 16, 2007

6:30 Elementary Library

After last month’s nominations the following officers have been elected:
Misty Balkema-President
Nicole Deckard-Vice President
Gretchen Gendron-Secretary
Susan McLemore-Treasurer

There was discussion about the bill for the track and field Popsicle cost, which is $200.  Discussion included the possibility of asking Minute Maid in Paw Paw for donations next year.

Arrangements for the 6th grade graduation were reviewed.  The idea of asking parents to donate cups, napkins, plates, punch, etc. was brought up.  In years past, what was served at the graduation was mainly donations from the parents.  Joyce will speak with Sue McQueen about drafting a letter asking for donations of the above items, as the parent group is already providing dinner for each student and cakes.

Volunteers for graduation night include:  Misty Balkema, Vangie Villanueva, and Beth Hafer.  The idea of hanging baskets as centerpieces / gifts for teachers was discussed.  Susan McLemore stated she would look into purchasing flowers from the ISD floriculture program.

Family movie night was again mentioned and Susan McLemore stated we had everything to put on a movie night except the DVD projector.  She spoke with Gene Butler who said costs have been coming down on this type of technology.  It was also mentioned that the PTA might purchase this item, maybe even in a shared cost with the school, considering it may be a useful item for the Reading Renaissance Rewards.  Susan will check into prices with Gene and report back at the next meeting.

Beth Hafer was in attendance and thanked the PTA for sponsoring the 5th grade field trip to the Air Zoo.  She stated that the trip was a success.  The students even had opportunity to speak with WW2 veterans.

Discussion was held about the first meeting date for the PTA to begin the 2007-2008 school year.  This decision was tabled until this summer.  Parent group members also discussed assigning chair person(s) for each main event sponsored by the parent group.  Example:  Christmas Bazaar, Grandparents Day, and Carnival.  This would ensure that the majority of the year’s responsibilities did not fall on one person.

Discussion was held about next year’s carnival and the possibility of purchasing new carnival games.  Gretchen Gendron said she would look into the company, “FUN TIMES” to quote prices for new games.  This company is also available to provide items to sell in the Christmas bazaar instead of asking for donations from the community.  This idea was also tabled until the next meeting.

In attendance:  Joyce Drenth, Mindy Donovan, Nicole Deckard, Susan McLemore, Beth Hafer, and Gretchen Gendron.
