A familiar face at Lawrence Public Schools assumes a new role! We are thrilled to announce that Tony DeVauld has accepted the position of Head Varsity Track Coach. Coach DeVauld boasts an eight-year coaching tenure. His coaching career commenced at Kalamazoo Central as a defensive coordinator for JV football. Six years ago, he joined Lawrence as the assistant coach for Girls Varsity Basketball. Three years ago, he undertook track coaching duties as the head middle school coach and progressed to assistant varsity track coach for the last three years. Coach DeVauld attributes his desire to accept this position to the program's growth over the past three years and his focus on continually enhancing the program.
DeVauld remarks, “We’ve achieved numerous conference and regional placements, and last year, a student advanced to the state level, which was a great experience. As a former track athlete, I never did that, so that makes it incredibly fulfilling to help coach and push and motivate talented athletes to reach these levels of competition and to meet their goals.” Coach DeVauld aims to establish consistency in day-to-day competition among all team members. He aspires to secure more victories for both the boys' and girls' teams, as well as enhance their competitiveness within the conference. Coach DeVauld asserts, “We possess sufficient athletic talent to place and compete effectively, ultimately winning conference titles.”
Athletic Director, Noah Wiswary had this to say about the addition of Coach Devauld to the Head Coach roster “ The level of commitment to Lawrence Athletics demonstrated by Tony Devauld is exceptional. Elevating Coach Devauld to the position of Head Track and Field Coach was an obvious decision. His extensive experience, coupled with his leadership skills, will undoubtedly empower our student-athletes to excel both in their sport and in their personal development.”

Lawrence Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Shabala as the new Head Varsity Baseball Coach. Coach Shabala's passion for baseball began at a young age, and he continued to nurture this interest while coaching his sons. He emphasized the importance of dedicating time to his children and ensuring they received proper coaching. Upon relocating to Michigan in 1992, Coach Shabala expanded his coaching expertise, guiding numerous young athletes, including several players who will be part of his team this year. Coach Shabala expressed his enthusiasm for assuming this coaching position, citing his retirement as affording him ample time to devote to the team, as well as his genuine love for the sport.
When asked about his objectives for the team this year, Coach Shabala stated his desire to improve upon last year's record. He acknowledged the team's youthfulness, yet emphasized their talent, highlighting the need to instill a sense of teamwork over individualism. "It's challenging at times, as good players often seek to stand out, but it's impossible to win a team sport with a single player. I remind my players, 'I'm your head coach, but I'm also a team member. We must work together to succeed!' I’ve always used this philosophy for baseball and it works! I'm eager to apply it to this team."
Athletic Director Noah Wiswary had this to say about new hire Mike Shabala “ I was thrilled to see Coach Shabala’s application come to me. Having a coach come in that is familiar with the school and with the student athletes is truly amazing. Coach Shabala wants to see our student athletes be successful on the field and off the field, I look forward to watching him lead this program.”
